Damned Speech

**Update: In response to the tagging, the fifth line of the post is as follows: "Like the surfing enthusiast that goes out once a decade, how consistent are our life choices with the things we say we value?"

OK It is now 2:10 and I am too politicomanic to engage in bloggery. Thanks, snow, for your unsolicited intervention...today I get to watch instead of reading, sans "chimpish expressionating". Did Bush just say that the filibuster on judicial nominations is to be reserved for extroardinary circumstances, and then in indicating that Alito's confirmation does not constitute an extraordinary circumstance, did he then say that what IS extraordianry is that Alito is qualified? Yes, Dubya. It IS rather unusual that you have nominated somebody with experience, isn't it? Yes, despite the fact that our rights as Americans will go the way of the damn dinosaur, YES. It is rather extraordinary that you picked somebody 'qualified' at least by the estimation of some! As opposed to unqualified by the estimation of, well, ALL. Dubya seems to feel that the job of a judge is to apply the law, the job of legislators to create it. Am I the only one who can't decide if I should laugh or cry?

ME FIRST YAY.....
hey there..saw the effin speech...he looked drunk ...and I loved the question about Student Loans being raped for 12.7 billion " I can't seem to hear ya"...
[he really didn't 'defend" the spying though- more like incrimianted himself]

Yes- I wish that you were here we could have thrown marshmallows at the TV...email me offline- we need to discuss the Tommy Tuesday project and "some other things"... ( Important Blogging Sister talk..seriously)

Yeah- I have to finish a new post tonight- but I want to
keep Fluffy up- have become attached to the little fella...
( and yes, the comments are gonna reach to texas...at this rate..)

Goddamned student loans can pay for teaching creationism on the campus as well as why the first amendment is irrelevant...loved that dubya went on about freedom of religion, all persuasions equal under our law- every bit as American, not like those theocratic regimes that 'blur the lines'.
We are freedom loving cowboys...

The problem being, of course, that he's forgotten his job of enforcing the law, not interpreting it. I freakin' hate the notion of a 'signing statement'. What a bunch of unconstitutional nonsense.

I'd go with "laugh" on this one. As a prominent Texas Republican once famously quipped, "if rape is inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it."

If you're not laughing at that analogy, you ain't breathing. That, or you fear for your mortal soul. Hard to say.

Rex: Thats the most goddamned ridiculous bit of text I ever read. NO way. If rape is inevitable, keep an icepick in your pocketbook.

Spoken like a true liberal, eh?
My soul, as I told you, will go to the heresy ring for eternal blaspheming.

Kvatch: Wasn't Neil's post on the signing statement great?

Need more marshmallows...

Ridiculous? Yes. True? Absolutely. I mistakenly thought the quote was from George H.W. Bush, but in fact was uttered by a Texas crony when he described the weather.

Oh goodie. I'm sick of sounding innocuous. (and "ominous" is butch right?!) Be warned: I'm all for 20 year olds drinking beer... and i'm for dykes getting married... i'm for fags in the military... i'm for letting potheads get high... i'm for fornication, adultery under many circumstances, and sodomy... i'm for a flat tax, and welfare, and healthcare, and free speech... and all sorts of other outrageous things. And i hope i'm out of step with the "Public", and their notion of "Morality". P.S. I love susan sontag. :)

Keep it up and I will have to lend you my name.

I've got one in diapers sitting here and I don't know how I'll ever be able to explain how we came to live in a polluted poverty stricken cesspool of a police state if we cannot learn how to overcome the propaganda mill.

Maybe a prayer chain asking for Alito to catch some horrible disease to teach him compassion. No, that's mean.

Maybe we cound invent oxycontin marshmallows and only eat them when we can't throw anymore.

Hmmmmmm.....I'm so out of the loop. I had a lot of licking to do and must have missed this.

So....I conclude that the little cowboy Fascist bastard gave a speech and some of you actually watched?

This propensity of humans to escape reality by watching reality t.v. has always fascinated me.

It seems so UGLY to me. Give me a classic like "That Darn Cat" and some popcorn and I'm happy.

I ain't no masocat.

Well Wadena where I live we had an official 'shut down the world' snowday!!! I do not watch daytime television- this was a speech televised from Kansas.
You didn't miss much. I think i will go back to WaPo transcripts..

Always nice to see Granny!!

lily, you can untag yourself if you want, let me know. i think your blog is awesome! you can WRITE!

Lily, don't respond to Rex. He's an old fashioned gentleman. He takes the dishes out of the sink before he pees in it.

I'm sorry I was at work while Shrub was bloviating...even my conservative cousin back in Arkansas said she loved seeing him squirm when asked if he'd seen the gay cowboy movie. When his daddy was prez, I'd get up early with a hangover to watch. Better than a football game for opportunities to yell at the TV!!!

Laugh or cry? Guess you can tell my choice.

Now lets get rid of these bastids!

this would be a hoot; I've already worked up a letter I'll be posting on my blog to cut and paste to send to yer local Dem you sent to DC.

I think they should hum "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" while they walk...does anybody remember Animal House?

livin' on the edge on Puget Sound...

I see Alito is already being called upon to bring and end to Roe v. Wade once and for all at some anti-abortion rally. No, of course he doesn't have any opinion on abortion whatsoever. Of course not. He has a open mind. And the brain has flown off somewhere...

Oh honey - you had snow? God, I miss the snow. My friend Amy said she got 1 foot last weekend. She emailed me pictures. I wanted to be there so much. There is nothing so spiritual as watching snowflakes silently drift through the bones of the trees. {sigh} You are a lucky woman.

As for the speech - I will admit, I forgot it was on. I know, I know - what the hell kind of engaged American am I that I space Bush's experiment in public speaking; but there you are. Other things distracted me. Sorry. Can we please go back to talking about the snow?

Thanks ever so much. What a great line.

Actually, it proves that Rex is an empiricist. Anyone who has ever pissed into a sink full of dishes knows that is only one step removed from pissing into a fan. And it was mere self interest that made him remove the dishes and some higher nobel sentiment.

Anonymous said...

And not some higher nobel sentiment. Damn these things need an edit button.

Rest assured, I am fully aware of the 'softer side of Rex". I saw the way he lovingly mentored at the 'infant marine corps".It took a lot of patience to teach them about weaponry, let me tell you.

Congrats to all the Koufax award nominees in my humble comment box...

Well deserved.

For the record, let it be known that I do not "pee in the sink," as has been so recklessly accused, but rather relieve myself as all men do...in the shower.

To be fair, I had the shower floor tiled in an Iranian flag motif some time ago.

Patriotically Yours,

Rex

You shower? Don't you just use baby wipes and Old Spice?

Wadena said...

Baby wipes, Old Spice and a brainwash from Faux News is what I heard he favors.

(Faux news.....be alerted--it will only take a light rinse.)

:)

meldonna said...

Baby wipes and Old Spice? That is good.

rich, I gotta do full disclosure: I got the 'pee in the sink' line from Miss Weeza in "Steel Magnolias", and have been waiting years for a good opportunity to use it. And as an Old Southern Woman, I do credit Mr. Kramer for his sense of humor; he can have the Drum Eatenton Award for the day.

Welll, Well Here it is Wednesday and I stopped back to see where the Discussion was headed, and such a pithy path it has taken. ...Ain't it just amazing that we always start having a rather dignified discussion about Sociopolitical Issues and instead end up discussing Piss in the Sink-and yet we are discussing the King and His Porcine Regime- so Somehow- that indeed makes sense. Miss Lilly I have to say- that you can indeed Rant with the Pros- am handing you my Rant Tiera for the week. Rex- you can come pee in the Enigma Cafe Sink anytime because in a confused yet wink-in-a-nod way We Get You. And Mel- the Quote from that Movie is priceless and well dimed.

Lily said...

Yes, Enigma. But I do not pretend to have a 'serious news shattering blog'. Nobody expects to get their news here! I am not a reporter, out on the front lines- this is not my career path... I trust that those who share my antics are more than capable of reading their own news sources as am I. So...what do we offer 'round here aside from septic sinks and juvenilia? A SUPPORT group for the "Insane Lefty Brigade". A shoulder to cry on about the sorry ass state of things...

Anonymous said...

Enigma- you have Pragmatic Pussy on your blog! Pithy????

Personally, I kind of like rex...hell, I'm from Arkansas. There'd be damn few people I talk to back home if I eight-balled everybody with a different slant from me! Besides, it's healthy in a democracy to debate.

All politics is local, and if you can get the screamers on both sides to quiet down with a good dose of humor, things get accomplished. Believe it or not, I still have faith in the basic American.

And to rex? I too pee in the shower...but I do make sure it's before I soap up. I hope that doesn't make this ol' country gal a latter-day yuppie. You know country folks can survive!

Y'all have a good 'un, y'hear?
